Is depression legally considered a disability in New Zealand? I am in the process of going through my insurance stuff, and happened upon the life insurance bit about temporary or permanent disabilities. It's very vague, and leaves me wondering whether my depression now makes me disabled. Would anyone know? Where could I find out about this?

Why can't the United States copy the Health Care from New Zealand? This is the word from my friend in N.Z.? My friend in New Zealand sent me this rather "spirited" email the other night. I have to clean it up a bit for the Yahoo censors but if I miss anything please excuse me. You will know when I replace HIS words b/c mine will be "funny replacements" if I can be so creative. Other than eliminating the cus words I left EVERYTHING else which will be fun for many of you and disgusting for some, but oh well, to each his own. I'm ONLY sending this to the R&S section because YOU are the only guys I trust and admire to tell me the truth. And NO, I am NOT a Republican, or even a Publican. And please, no comments about his spelling or the occasional drift in sentence structure. He doesn't care and THAT is what is NOT important here .. this gentleman from the foreign land of New Zealand is 60, very aware of what Health Care SHOULD be and is my dear friend so PLEASE be nice when you answer. I do NOT do Thumbs Down so it's not from me if one appears. Here goes: Well i read a little of what was in that one Dart and all I can say is that you live in a ducky sad country, here in New Zealand or in Australia I can book into hospital tomorrow and have all the work I need to be done on my Arteries for nothing, I will have top quality medical treatment and top quality rehab afterward. All medicines I need are free and every week I receive two hundred and sixty dollars disability support payment and am entitled to another seventy rent assistance. Now if a little countries like mine can afford and organise things like this what the daffy-duck is going on in the US, how do the rich con people into believing that they owe their land a living rather than the reverse, how is it that the people that will benefit most from this and other proposals fight hardest against it. I know they will scream liberal socialism but what about all the money that has been handed to the self interested demonstrably incompetent executives of the banks insurance and car industries. All poor peoples money because have no doubt about it there are not enough rich people to pay for the running of the US it is poor people that pay the bills. I had a double bypass two years ago and the only cost to me was that of the taxi fare into town to the hospital the cat scans the visits to specialists the attempt at opening my arteries all free and then I had a private room with tinted double glazing that looked over Brisbane. I then moved interstate to stay with my daughter for my recovery and had six weeks of rehab in a hospital gym supervised by trained Physio's and specialist nursing staff three times a week for six weeks, cost to me Nothing. All paid for in my taxes by a small medicare levy, a piddling amount that nobody ever notices and I am entitled to all of this until my income exceeds two hundred thousand a year. So what the heck is going on over there, the model is available, the information is available, the money is available yet Obama is constantly being forced to downgrade what he wants to offer the people of the US. Put simply Dart I don't understand it. This link will give you an idea about what is available under the auspices of a caring and friendly country to guest workers it is exactly the same as that offered to any Australian. As I have remarked before US citizens don't even begin to understand what it means to live in a land of the free. And if you think thats pretty good then you ought to check out the benefits offered to veterans of any war our politicians get us involved in, I almost went to Vietnam just to have the entitlements like fixed low interest loans for housing and business startup free dental for life free phsyc for life etc etc. Feel free to send this note to your local fed rep and ask what the heck is going on, who is being conned over there. None of which is your fault I know I just thought you might like some information on what happens in a free country, on a lighter side Damn the one ganja seed I found in my bag has gone all mildew when I tried to strike it. Woe is me I cant get connected here and am beginning to feel like a bloody citizen. But what the hell I should be kayaking by the middle of next week so all is not gloom and doom the weather is up to 10 degrees c here now flowers everywhere life is good my best to the Lord may his bowl be ever full and yours as well Regards Mal MY QUESTION IS: WHY CAN'T THE USA do as well as a country as small as NEW ZEALAND? Why can't our Congress copy THEIR LAW and vote it in and GET HER DONE!?

Yoda replied: "Does it matter which system is adopted, or how you make it work? Can USA rich people accept paying towards poor people's health care costs? How much money will USA insurance companies lose if free health care is offered to all those on less than $20,000 per annum?"

MichMom replied: "Because, America, with our land of individualistic people, is the only country that feels no obligation to help those who need help the most. Far too many of my fellow yanks feel that it's THEIR money and they are not about to help anyone other than those they care about. I hope that someday they will walk a mile in the mocassins of those of us who cannot afford $700 per month or more to cover their families in health care. Not everyone has $700 they can part with for monthly premiums. Even if they cut every corner possible. And no, not every American is driving an expensive car, going to night clubs and just feeling like they want to leech off of others. I wonder if those who feel that they don't want to lose what they have, will ever have to go through what unemployed and underemployed people here go through. But, what they don't realize is that premiums for their employers are rising faster than inflation, and that at some point, companies are going to say they can no longer afford the cost of the monthly healthcare premiums for their employees. If you don't want nationalized healthcare and have insurance through your employer, take a minute to ask your benefits rep, how much it costs per month for your employer to pay a family's premiums for your coverage. Try paying that per month when your monthly income is about 140% of that amount. You can't do it."

robert C replied: "he may be on a private health ins. plan. you don't book yourself into a hospital and you are in next day. a doctor referrs you to a specialist, the specialist referrs you to the hospital, the hospital writes you and books you in for a talk etc. that may take you up to a year. doctors visits ,you pay for.30 -45 $n.z. and even then your operation can be put on hold. and you pay a subsidy on the pre ions"

What does an Insurance Agent's job entail? I recently posted my resume on CareerBuilder.com and since then I am continuously getting emails from Insurance companies to be an insurance agent. Personally I hate pushing paper and making phone calls (and my resume obviously states that considering all the carpenters experience i have noted). BUT I have a baby on the way and am getting very desperate for a job and am actually considering calling one of these guys back... I'd just like an opinion from someone who has first hand experience as an agent or whom has worked for an insurance company. What would it be like when I first joined? How much salary can I expect? And what kind of work can I be expected to perform? Anything would be great. I will post one of the emails I received: Hello, my name is xxxxxxx, State General Agent for American Income Life Insurance Company. Do the Republicans not hear the President when he said you can KEEP your health care insurance if you want? And do they hear that the US is 50th in the world for life expectancy? Who is ahead of us you may ask?The European countries , New Zealand and Canada..all those countries with NATIONAL health care. Maybe the GOP needs to LISTEN more....

Anne replied: "They hear, they just don't comprehend."

GlobalWarming replied: "It shows that aside from blind they are also deaf."

ATTENTION: Testicles That Is All replied: "Obama says a lot of things that he doesn't mean and that are not true."

Silver Fox replied: "Are you not paying attention to the BIG PICTURE? Maybe you should open your eyes and see that BIG GOVERNMENT is NOT the answer. EDIT: Awww...thumbs down from the blind sheep...keep showing your ignorance."

Edward replied: "That's just code-talk for you can't keep it. Everyone knows that!"

John replied: "They can hear fine, they just don't wanna pay for something they fear might not work, Its a reasonable excuse...."

LeftofCenter replied: "I agree"

J P replied: "Sure, just like I heard him say that the Stimulus package would start helping the economy "almost right away." I knew that was bull$hit, too."

danrathersatitagain replied: "you can keep it until they take it away"

Romare replied: "I think the problem arises because they don't actually listen to the President but rather listen to the right-wing commentators' SPIN on what the President said. That's why they end up confused."

Scott replied: "He also said that unemployment wouldn't go over 8.5% with the spenulus... and that no one making under $250,000 a year would see a tax increase... then it was $200,000... Soon it will be no one collecting a welfare check... Also just because you make something up doesn't make it true! You Obama supporters will believe ANYTHING the CLOWN says! OBAMA HAS NO HEALTH CARE ADMINISTRATION EXPERIENCE!"

Libs should car pool with Ted K replied: "how many of those countries are world super powers? Bueler....Bueler. also if I keep my own health insurance does that mean my doctors office and our hospitals won't be over crowded by many who aren't paying a dime for their insurance leaving us who do pay waiting for much longer? (20+million illegal immigrants ) If I keep my own health insurance that I pay for does that mean I still have to pay for yours? lets say their a 60 year old male who worked all his life and a 25 year old punk never held a job and has a three page rap sheet. they are both in need of life saving surgery and their is only one opening in the next 9 months. who gets it under Obamas plan? the 25 year old and the 60 year old gets to pay for it. your idea of fair is not slightly off it's completely backwards."

Shirley J replied: "Do you believe all the propaganda they throw at you? I take it you are not a world traveler. I have relatives in Canada & Europe and they tell me horror stories about NATIONAL health care. Trust me. It is not a good thing. People die and suffer needlessly. Do a little more research before you make up your mind."

jamie replied: "well you fools may believe we can but do you really think that he will not tax the hell out of them so they can not stay in business? and as far as being 50th ,you no what i will gladly stay in the u.s. we are living longer then any time before but you can continue to watch msnbc because of right now we are still free, but obama might oh wait i cant disagree with obama so ill stop"

toorie replied: "Yes I do ask. What European countries are you talking about? There are many, or didn't you know that. As far as New Zealand goes, they have a lot less stressful life. More women die from breast cancer in England because the NHS cannot afford the high end drugs that work. You really need to do your homework and stop giving sound bites Universal health care has been a failure, let's learn from it EDIT: Many of the European countries and Canada also have the lowest birth rates, a lot smaller headcount to average out"

electricpole replied: "I listen to him as I did during his campaign. He is a master of crafting speech to make it sound like each group would like it to. The long term plan, (Libs are all about incremental-ism), is to "allow" people to keep their plans, but in actuality, make it so financially unattractive do so you will defacto be forced to participate in the "gov-ment" plan. Just like his 2nd Amendment end around in IL. You can have your guns, but we will try to make ammunition so expensive, the guns will be impotent. I would like to view the compilation standards used for the life expectancy metrics going around."

DukeofDixie replied: "read page 16 of the health care bill, where it says the year that this bill passes, NO individual health insurance policies can be sold legally in this country, maybe the Dems need to read more, instead of just saying yes to everything Obama says******************"

e_c_rowe replied: "Perhaps they do hear him and don't trust him. This would not be the first time he made false promises in order to get people to support him. Remember how he promised that every bill will be available online for a week before voting on it? Or how he wasn't going to keep up warrantless wiretaps? Or how his stimulus plan would take effect immediately with shovel ready projects, saving and creating millions of jobs? In the case of his health care promises, his detractors have some simple concepts of math and economics on their side. It will certainly not be the case that a new public health insurance program will compete against private companies according to the same rules and regulations they follow, so that the costs of this public health insurance will only be funded by payments made by its participants apart from any special tax breaks for them or tax increases for others, and so that this program will fold like private companies would if it loses money. Thus the very existence of such a plan will necessarily push private companies that don't have the same advantages it has out of the market. On the other hand, if it really does play by the same rules, then it is entirely superfluous and will not accomplish anything different than the addition of a new private insurance company to the market would, in which case it would be impossible to fulfill its stated goal of providing health insurance to those who can't afford it now."

MikeGolf replied: "We hear him when he says this - but then consider the fact that he has yet to keep a promise. What Obama says and what he does have nothing to do with each other."

the violator replied: "really, 50th? where did you get that info from? jon stewart perhaps? i got mine from the center for disease control and they disagree. they said 27th. that is a pretty big difference from what you claim."

route66_hustler replied: "Research the bill and read page 16 of it where it says after the date this bill goes into effect it will be forbidden to take out private insurance. You should talk to someone from Canada and ask them what they think of the health care they have then ask them why Canadians come to the states by the thousands every year because they can't get care in Canada. I have an aunt that lives in Toronto that has had a tumor behind her jaw and she just waited 2 months to get an MRI and she won't get the results for 3 weeks and then who knows how long it will take to actually get something done about it...you have no idea what you are rambling about. Today the CBO put out a report saying Obama's health care will break this country."

Mick Jaguar replied: "Yes, but an employer, in order to save money may elect a less than desirable insurance package for his employees, knowing if the complain they have an alternative. A lot of group insurance has the employee footing most of the premium with deductables so high, it's not worth having. The sensible option would be an relatively inexpensive major medical policy where the insured would be responsible for office visits. In the farm equipment business' hayday, the insurance was one hundred percent, but did not cover office visits. The real problem today is doctors and hospitals charge too much, but everybody is afraid to admit it. We don't need government control over our healthcare, they can't handle Medicare and Mediaid. Medicare recipients pay one hundred dollars a month for doctor visit benefits, yet can't find a doctor who will take them, so can you imagine the whold nation's health care facing the cuts Medicare has suffered? The supidist assertion is the funding for a national healthcare policy could be funded by cutting Medicare and Medicaid. What????? Those are the national policies. I guess to cover those without health insurance, Obama sees fit to take most the care away from the disabled and senior citizens. These programs are a nightmare, you should find out how recipients have to travel over one hundred miles to get a doctor. They leave decent sized areas, and have to go to smaller towns. Thats exactly what the whole populace is facing. Yes, private policies will be substantially dumbed down by employers."

James replied: "The Gop did hear him but it is just stupid and usa is not 50th in life expectancy its in the top 5 and people over in countries with national health care they hate it that's why they come here the quality and the wait is much worse"

Moose replied: "You actually BELIEVE this President? Page #16 of the new bill in Congress makes it illegal for you to keep your insurance if you're self insured. You MUST take the government's program. Caught the Socialist in another Lie. This came out in today's news. This creep Obama doesn't care about you! If he cared at all the solution would be over the 12 Million who don't have insurance...not the remaining 303 Million people in the US. It's all about POWER. He wants Socialism. You die...you die...so what?"

MS_YA_NSA_TRIAD replied: "They heard, they just are so dependent on the fear factor that they ignore the facts to try and scare anyone who has not checked out the facts."

I am KING Obama!! BOW TO ME replied: "duh! WHY keep your insurance? obama is giving it away and taxing EVERYONE. so why "Pay" for insurance when obama is giving it away? how dumb are you people?"

Nikki replied: "Barry has said a lot of things. Not too many of them were true."

Who's entitled to my fathers house? (No will\Intestacy)? Last month my father passed away in a work accident and there was no will left behind. His assets included a house worth $250k, life insurance worth $30k and $50k in his bank account. All up he was worth around $330k After speaking with a lawyer today I was informed that his de facto partner (girlfriend) of 14 years was entitled to $125k of his assets, 1\3 of the remaining balance and all chattels (furniture, TVs, utensils, vehicles, etc). The remaining balance is to go to me, but my only concern is the house. He used to tell me (and other family members) that the house was going to be passed down to me, but now that theres no will what can I do? Extra details: - His girlfriend didn't live in his house and they didn't share financial responsibilities - The house wasnt under a joint tenancy and he had paid off the mortgage - I am his only child - Scenario takes place in New Zealand - He had one life insurance under my name for $15k and one under his own name for $15k

Killer Queen replied: "I would say to take this lawyer's advice. He knows the laws in New Zealand and I doubt if many here do."

bob_frangione2000 replied: "The life insurance goes to whomever was named beneficiary. The house will likely be sold and distributed. You need to discuss this with your lawyer"

Gypsy Girl replied: "Nobody here is going to know more than the lawyer. If you don't believe the lawyer then seek a second opinion. Perhaps you can challenge the law."

Christopher replied: "This is in the US but my cousin passed away about 6 weeks ago. Single with a live in girl friend, no will and worth about 450k. And the girl friend got nothing, and all his assets were divided up to his two kids. The two kids like the girl friend and they did give her 5 grand for taking care of their father through extremely rough times medically in the last month of his life. Their also allowing her to live in the home till she finds a place of her own. But all countries, and states are different, my cousin's kids got a good lawyer and everything turned out all right."

jackson replied: "I am not familiar with New Zealand law. But in the UK, US, Canada and Europe you would simply get it all. As New Zealand is a commonwealth nation I would not imagine it would not be any different. No financial ties, no legal ties and she does not live there. Even if they had dated her for years she would still be someone he is dating. Imagine if you were dating someone and if you die they can take your stuff? If he wanted her to have it he would have made a will or married her. So how can she prove any intent that he would want her to have anything? De Facto partner in most places mean that they actually live together. I assume she has a key. But if she does not live there and is not on the deed she has no right to enter the house. You as the surviving executor so you have the right to change the locks. I am usually the executer for anyone in my huge extended worldwide family. The first thing I learned to do is to call someone and have the locks changed. This is because who knows who has a key and with freinds, girlfreinds and family members about things have a habit of disappearing before it is all sorted out. If it was a workplace accident it is possible that the workplace's insurance owes you some sort of payout. That would depend on what happened or if he worked for himself. The insurance company might offer you a settlement in order for you to not take it to court. If he was working for himself same deal with say a homeowners insurance. Same if he had some sort of business insurance A lawyer would know what to do. You need to speak to another lawyer. Just saying she gets all of that does not sound right. It is to cut and dried as A: he should suggest taking it to court to see if she is due anything at all and B: if she does happen to be due anything (doubtful) a law suit would help deal with the actual amount. And C: faced with a lawsuit she might be willing to take a smaller amount knowing she might lose or not afford a protracted legal battle. It is possible your lawyer is not used to this sort of case or even if he is not be the kind that will take it to the mat and be aggressive."

can i claim maintanance? My friend is 6 months pregnant. She has a minimum wage job that just covers her medical insurance. The father of the child is married and lives in New Zealand. He gives her a bit of money most months(she has to beg for it though). Is there any way that she can claim maintanance once the baby is born. She lives in south africa. I want that Gekko on the Geico commercial!!! His little Kiwi accent!? We could talk about life and his family that he left behind in New Zealand, and how a car insurance company exploited him for a green card. I would make him say,"wiv chips" all the time!!!

Is this the year Americans will realize they are being ripped off? By the medical, insurance and pharmaceutical companies and demand universal health care? We pay TWICE as much for health care as countries doing better than us in these areas like Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK. We are 27th in Life Expectancy and 21st in Infant Mortality. What is wrong with this picture? Source: CIA Factbook Kerauno: You fell for the lie. Check out "Sicko" which compares health care in different countries and then go to the site to see the research and then research the research and you will see you have been conned by the medical, insurance and pharmaceutical lobbyists and the lackey politicians they have in their pockets.. You too sister. Either you have been blinded by the lobbying efforts or you are shills for the industry.

replied: "And yet the USA is still the only remaining superpower in the world today."

It's A New Day Gypsy replied: "Here's hoping."

Joshua H replied: "Amazing, isn't it? But the insurance companies and their bought and paid for Republican politicians have people scared, I guess . . ."

Julie K replied: "I don't know about you, sweetie, but I have been aware of the "rip off" of the American people for quite some time. The industries you mention are multi-billion dollar companies that are only interested in profit, not the betterment of care."

Kerauno replied: "I'd rather pay twice as much and get to pick my doctor, not to mention getting an appointment with a specialist within a couple of days versus socialized medicine where it can take over a year. Some people who live in countries with socialized medicine and have a uncommon but treatable disease DIE before they get treatment. Response: I STILL do not the government handling my health care. Despite the high cost of health care, I prefer to deal with a free market health care focused on profits than socialized health care focused on bureaucracy."

Sourer Taco replied: "by AIPAC "

sister_godzilla replied: "I'd rather have U.S. health care as it is now than any kind of socialized health care. I don't want to wait days or weeks or months to see a doctor. It takes less than 2 hours to see a doctor now. Let's don't change it."

Tony L replied: "Healthcare is the leading cause of death in America"

Is anyone bothered at all by these statistics? Do we really have? the best health care system? PLEASE just read through and tell me that something is really wrong when the greatest country in the world stacks up to other countries in the way we do. Reports & statistics from the OECD: Half of all bankruptcies IN THE US are caused by medical bills Three-quarters of those filings are by people with health insurance. The average overhead cost for U.S. private health insurers is 11.7%; for Medicare, it is 3.6%; for Canadas national health insurance program, it is 1.3 % A baby born in El Salvador has a better chance of surviving than a baby in Detroit. The infant mortality rate in Detroit is 15.5, compared to El Salvador's rate of 9.7.12 Over the next decade, the US federal government will give the drug & health care industries an estimated $822 billion as a result of the 2003 Medicare Part D (Medicare pre ion drug plan). There are four times as many health care lobbyists in Washington as there are members of Congress There are 100 times more lobbyists of all stripes in Washington today than there were during the Reagan presidency. 90% of Americans believe the American health care system needs fundamental changes or needs to be completely rebuilt. 75% of Americans believe the federal government should guarantee universal health care for all citizens. Two of them, Mexico and Turkey, have the excuse of being poorer than the rest (and until the onset of the world economic crisis, Mexico was on the way to providing healthcare to all of its citizens). The third, of course, is the United States. Maxwell, that's too bad. The stats are NOT mine. They are from the OECD. So you think they just make up numbers that are not true? That's about as logical as the birther movement.

J.D. replied: "We have the best health care system for money hungry conservatives....."

Maxwell replied: "You lost me when you claimed "75% of Americans believe the federal government should guarantee universal health care" I do not believe that statistic for ONE second. Which makes me suspect of anything else you have to say. especially when you back up nothing with any sources. ADD: That is fine if they aren't your numbers, but if 75% of America wanted UHC, there would be protests against BO's plan going to far, there would protests that they don't go far enough. Remember, if 75% of americans think that, then the majority of Reps must by in favor of UHC. And we both know that isn't the case."

DebbieP replied: "It's great info - but the right won't believe it"

andy g replied: "Nope because the cut and paste bs also needs to be backed up with the countries budgets, tax rates, and etc...!!!!"

AnneCoultersnemesis replied: "The best solution to our broken system is a single payer system and to take the profit making insurance corporations out of the system altogether. Right now our system is set up for hospitals to profit off keeping patients sick by repeatedly running needless and redundant tests for insurance corporations to pay. And, then if the patient needs any real care like an operation or transplant or what ever to save the person's life after all those tests are taken, then the insurance corporation denies the proceedure because they are in the business of making profits. If they don't pay for the proceedure, they save money that the patient already sent in as premiums. The system is corrupt and bankrupt. It is set up to keep us sick and in debt. That's a fact."

I want tastebuds replied: "As someone who works closely with the medical insurance industry, I know all about those stats, man. I'm just surprised people are this ignorant to assume that nothing should be done about it. Obama is, at least, thinking in the right direction even if his ideas are not embraced."

goneoffline replied: "No one is fleeing the USA in mass & becoming a citizen of another country for their "great" medical care. Rather World Leaders flee to the USA for Medical Care. No other country in the world has made so many medical advances as the USA. Get Gov out of the Health Care Business, medical advances will speed up. Get Gov Bureaucrats taking over, medical advancements slow to a crawl."

jamie replied: "yes and yet everyone keeps coming to the u.s. for health care wow i just do not understand why my smart liberal friend can you educate us because i know you think you are so smart and i know you think i am so stupid because im republican so tell me about your education like you like to do and feel free to spell check my answer and criticize as you like to do and also feel free to tell me how you care about people"

jax replied: "As usual, your "statistics" are a joke, as are your sources. This is biased reporting at its best."

bluechristy7 replied: "Thank You so Much for this information . I know when My Veteran husband suffered from an aneurysm and the VA would Not take him because of Republican budget cuts to the VA It Bankrupted me ; though I did not file bankruptcy I just paid off what I could because I sold our home and still could not fix the car ( the rear main seal went out in our Honda) . My business went under as well So I came back to my home state from Texas pretty broke . It has been a Long Haul since he passed away and Now I too am ill with cancer ."

White House Operative replied: "Considering our population is substantially larger than any of those countries, it seems we are doing pretty well. What are the break downs in a per capita analysis?"

Planet replied: "Yes, they are bothersome and I can attest to the bankruptcy statistics personally, having been a minor in the stroke community, where a LOT of people who've had them lost their jobs, their health care insurance and all their assets. Those who are able to keep their health insurance are cut off from services by unrealistic, rationing by the insurance companies"

X replied: "Yeah, we need health care reform badly. Only fool or a rich conservative can deny these facts (maybe they're both)."

Libertine Saint replied: "These people are mindless shills for big health industries. They parrot lies with such vigor because they refuse to listen to reality. It must be sad going through life acting against your own self interest because you simply don't know any better."
